How To Dress For A Job Interview

First impressions always count – especially when it comes to your potential employer. Your outfit should always be neat, chic, & professional. Avoid bringing in too much attention to your style where tight clothing, extravagant prints, short cut, sheer, or bright neon colours makes an entrance to your next job interview. It’s important to showcase your best self while looking classy and sophisticated. If you’re a woman who needs some interview inspiration, I’ve got you covered with suitable outfit ideas for your next job venture!

Clean Beauty

No no, don’t worry! I’m not saying you need to get it professionally done by an artist in order to look great for your interview. I am however saying that having a clean and well put together look also includes your hair, makeup, hygiene, and so much more! Be sure to:

  • Shower the morning of your interview
  • Wear deodorant
  • Wear a light perfume (avoid over spraying as it can be an unpleasant experience for the employer and the office environment)
  • Have great breath (minty fresh all the way!)
  • Wear neutral tones for your eye makeup (avoid any neon or bright colours)
  • Have painted and clean manicured nails – nothing worse than chipped and unpolished nails when shaking your employer’s hand
  • Have neat hair for a polished finish (ungreasy pony, straight, or volumized curls)

Conservative Shoes

Strut your way to success with the perfect interview shoes. Find a low – mid low heel or a pair of flats that are not scuffed or damaged. Generally, wearing an open toe or back heel may look unflattering and risky. A simple and basic shoe can be versatile with any design or outfit in your wardrobe. Aim to avoid any sneakers, flip flops, uggs, or sandals as these can create a careless attire choice to a professional workspace.

Minimal Accessories

Trust me, less is more – especially to a job interview. You don’t want your outfit filled with dangling bracelets, earrings, and necklaces as these can overpower the look and become distracting for you and your employer. Stick to gold, silver or rose gold tones for a more mature style. Limit your accessories to one ring a hand, a simple watch, elegant earrings, and a one pendant necklace for the ultimate ensemble.

Of course avoid any hats, sporty bandanas, chunky bags, sunglasses, & oversized belts to any professional job interview!

Essential Outfit Pieces

Remember, although the key to a job interview outfit is ‘professionalism’, it is however crucial to bring your own personality and individuality to your finished look. Whatever the dress code may be, you should always look sharp & graceful. Nonetheless, don’t forget to make your outfit unique to your personal style and approach! Here are some basic ideas to get you started:

  • Fitted blazer
  • Button down shirts
  • Blouses with interesting details
  • Simple black dress with tights
  • Statement dress with unique designs and colours
  • Pencil skirt or dress pants
  • Knitted sweater
  • Fitted turtle neck
  • Neutral coloured cartigan

Do your VERY best to avoid jeans (especially with rips in them), crop tops, shorts, sweaters, sweatpants, oversized tops, low cut tanks, and any other casual or inappropriate attire! Remember, we want that great first impression right?
