The Pros and Cons Of Cruising

Cruises – you either love them, hate them, or truly never even considered them for your next vacation spot. Although the overall pros and cons are surely based on personal opinions around people’s interests and priorities, it is important to weigh in on both sides in order to get a deeper understanding as to why some people do prefer traveling the world onboard.

The Pros

One: You Get to Sample Cities

It’s truly rare for travellers to say that they have visited unique cities such as Antigua (Guatemala), Civitavecchia (Italy), Kusadasi (Turkey), or even Labadee (Haiti) without going on a cruise ship. These ports give you the opportunity to visit and meet various locals, cultures, cuisines, and beaches around the globe. You can as well privately book an excursion offered by the country to do with fellow passengers in order to receive the ultimate experience. When your day is complete, you can hop back on the ship and enjoy all the fun while the captain sails you to your next destination spot.

This is me in Kusadasi, Turkey where I took a 4 hour tour around the Ephesus Museum. With just CAD $30, I was able to get a private tour guide, coach bus, and access to some beautiful Turkish history.

Two: There’s So Much to Do Onboard

It’s hard to be bored when there are infinite activities and events happening all around you. Everyday on the ship, you will be introduced to a new itinerary that will highlight various adventures occurring throughout the ship. For instance, there could be a bingo night, an afternoon trivia event, comedy show, liquor tasting, and so much more. Not to mention, each ship is filled with its own facilities and special onboard entertainment. So whether you enjoy rock climbing, water slides, or even some simple jazz music, there’s totally something for everyone to enjoy.

Three: They’re Budget Friendly

Although it all depends on your room choice, cruise package, and flight cost, the cruise experience is actually quite affordable for all the amenities you receive. When breaking down the cost per night, the 24/7 food, onboard entertainment, and port destinations, it all seems to be worth every penny. There are always great deals online, which include upgrades and additional perks. So, be sure to take advantage of the offers for an unforgettable trip.

Four: There is a Variety of Dining Options

You may be asking yourself, okay so even resorts have dining options, what’s the difference? Cruise ship food is unlike anything you have ever experienced. The ships are filled with ice cream shops, pizzerias, diners, world class buffets, and an infinite amount of a la carte restaurants to choose from. The variety is truly endless, and you will be dreaming about your meals the minute your trip is over – I know I still do.

The Cons

One: Not Enough Time in Each Location

While cruising is one of the best ways to travel the world, there is however a time span in each port which does not allow you to explore each city to its fullest potential. In many cases, the ship will allow passengers off by morning time and they must be back onboard by evening time. This only gives you a few hours to squeeze in your daily itinerary before the last call to get back on the ship. Nonetheless, some cruises do offer an overnight stay at certain ports which can be a great opportunity for nightlife or other at port activities.

Two: It’s Not All Inclusive

Although most restaurants and onboard entertainment are included in your initial price, here is a list of things that require additional pay in order to get the full experience.

  • Flight & Accomodations To Get to the Cruise Ship
  • Drinks (Pop & Alcohol)
  • A La Cart Dining Options
  • Certain Onboard Activities
  • Internet
Most cruise ships now allow passengers to bring wine and soft drinks onboard under certain restrictions and guidelines. However, bringing in any hardcore alcohol (beer, vodka etc.) will be confiscated during your stay.

Three: You Don’t Have That Constant Access To The Ocean

Wait, what? The ocean is all around us! Yes, but unlike a resort or an on land vacation, you truly don’t have open access to swim in the ocean 24/7. The idea of tanning and soaking up the sun is all included in your fun cruise trip. However, the unfortunate disadvantage of not getting enough of the ocean is a real loss for many travellers. But again, you do get the chance to visit beautiful sand beaches throughout your destinations so its all about your personal preferences at the end of the day!

To Sum Up

As with every vacation planning, pros and cons are important to lay out in order to guarantee an unforgettable experience. Be sure to talk to friends, travel agents, and read online reviews before making a final decision. Complete your research and plan it out to fit your needs and expectations. Don’t forget to take risks, have fun, and always stay safe when traveling.
